    Flouride and Other Marketing Missteps

    Did you catch the purposeful misspelling of 'fluoride' in the title? Can I share with you that my most recent product evaluation was for a prophy paste that displayed its active ingredient misspelled in large bold font on the outside packaging? More importantly, that same misspelling was emblazed across the product web site. I was embarrassed for the manufacturer that someone responsible for marketing the prophy paste had let such a huge error slip by.

    Selective Polishing

    My approach to coronal polishing has changed over the course of my dental hygiene career of 30+ years. In dental hygiene school, every patient received a coronal polish following calculus removal, period. The thought of skipping that finishing step didn’t cross my mind in the early years of clinical practice. And surely wouldn’t the patient have a reasonable grievance with a hygienist who didn’t polish? What hygienist that was truly concerned about the patient would choose to provide incomplete care?
